Another Day…

10/06/2009

Greetings… I just spent the last 15 minutes writing an update, and for some reason it vanished into the aether… Oh well. Here is mark II:

I have not been blogging with anything resembling regularity, so I thought I would take a minute and update you, my faithful reader(s), on the events that are my life. No great insights or world shattering ideas here today. Just a few words on my life…

I was fortunate enough to obtain a term contract for the month of June. I have two grade 10 science classes and on biology 11 class. My students work pretty well, but it is hard for everyone at this time of year to stay motivated. Unfortunately I am then unemployed over the summer, so if you have any work for me, let me know ;-)

I have also started training for a marathon! That is correct: I am going to train to run 42.2 km (or 26 miles if you are imperialistic in your metrics). I want to run the Okanagan Marathon (Kelowna, October 11, 2009). I am nervous and excited. Nervous because if you know me, you will know that I was never traditionally an athlete. Excited because I have never attempted something this ambitious, requiring so much discipline. I want to succeed, so I need to work hard. I really enjoy running… And lets face it, part of it is bragging rights!!

I am also taking classes at the ole’ universityscholarium for the summer and continue to chip away at my Bachelor of Science.

Life goes on, much as it has the past few months, and in the grand scheme of things, I have little to complain about. I have my health ( at least I think I do) and a loving family. A roof over my head, and generally steady employment… I am an extremely wealthy man when it comes down to it.

Enough ramblings… hopefully more posts later!

Be Kind

It is still the End of a Human Life…

04/03/2009

While waiting for my class this afternoon, I eavesdropped on a conversation of several business students who were waiting to do a presentation. They were discussing new sniper rifles and the merits of medium ranged weapons. Apparently one of these students was or is in the military and had attended sniper school. They began discussing Xm-110 308 that the US military is deploying now and ballistics and windage and bullet mass and powder loads and so on…

They were casually discussing devices that only serve one function: ending human life. I felt like saying this to them, that they were discussing devices that have to redeeming function, but I decided that I did not want to be a jackass.

We are so callous about human life (and I am referring to already born human life… no abortion comments please…). We watched programs on television on which humans are routinely and often brutal murdered. We play video games with the same themes. We discuss instruments of death as casually as we might discuss a good book….

So much effort we put into killing each other over so little cause or provocation.

It needs to stop…
