Tilde Hash Pipe Ampersand

~#|&
I have not much to blog today, but I am trying for more blogs in a week, so I will write some nonsense and esnesnon. I was watching a show on PBS earlier… It was Nature, and it was a program about creatures in nature that humans generally consider “ugly”. It showed how the “ugliness” was actually adaptations that allowed the creatures to survive and thrive in their respective habitats. Examples included the naked mole rat, the elephant seal, various arthropods, bats and others. It reminded me how we humans constantly categorize nature based upon our own misconceptions and ideals of beauty. How often is a celebrity seen championing the cause of a cute, furry endangered species. Contrast with how little you see the celebrities championing the cause of a slimy, gruesome, parasitic endangered species.

We need to remember that each organism has evolved to fill a very specific niche in its ecosystem, and whether it is cute and furry, or hideous and slimy, they are all essential to the well-balanced function of a diverse environment. So I say props to the naked mole rat and the whip-scorpion. Kudos to the hagfish and vulture. I appreciate the roles you fill, and the beauty that you possess as a function of your wonderfully evolved adaptations. Be nice to the little critters of nature… “The little critters of nature; they don’t know that they are ugly. A fly marrying a bumble bee. Its true. I tole you its true… I’ll teach your grandmother to suck eggs…”
