Let all be warned… Thine dayeth of thou Lord Approachest…
Why am I forecasting the coming end of the world? It is simple. Read on:
The Back Street Boys have a new album out, and it is Number 2 (Behind Brittney) on the charts this week. I almost watched the video of their single, but the bile rose too quickly and I did not have that overwhelming urge (that I must admit sometimes strikes me) to clean up vomit. As such, I changed the channel.
I make no claims that I am a music snob. I know what I like (which is actuallly quite broad and varied) and whether or not people like what I like, so be it. I really enjoy They Might Be Giants. They are not everybody’s cup of tea, but I like it. That is the way it is. However, I am becoming sickended by the money spewing machine that is pop-music. I feel bad for all of the fantastic young musicians out there who cannot catch a break because they are not sexy enough, or unsellable. Here is Britney, pop-queen of drama extraordinaire (I do feel sorry for her… She grew up way to fast and is suffering… ) getting another album. There’s Backstreet, back AGAIN and they have a TV show as well! Over there the rap ‘music’ (Marc, is single quotation marks the correct punctuation here?) that basically glorifies greed, objectification of women, and violence.
At least the internet has allowed many fantastic “indie” bands rise to fame they well deserve by allowing them to publish their own music, recorded on laptop recording studio software, in their basement. A good site to check out Indie Canadian music is cbc radio 3. Here is the link: CBC3, or you can find it in the iTunes radio choice in iTunes.
When it comes down to it, there is really nothing I can say about your choice of music. Consider who you support when you (hopefully) purchase your music. Is it supporting fat record lable cats who manufacture music that is sweeter than a can of Coca Cola, targeting youth audiences with oversexualized bubble gum? Or is it supporting artists who write their own music/lyrics AND play their own instruments (that is a big deal for me). Yes, yes, I know that pop is catchy, and I will admit that I have whistled the odd bar of “I want you back” or “Oops I did it again” now and then, but try to expand your horizons. Give CBC3 a try, or look for indie pop or whatever elsewhere.
There is no disputing taste, “but”, as a friend once said: “you can classify it!” Hopefully you have good taste in music.
And for the sake of that is holy, unholy, slightly holy, and my wool socks, lets get Backstreet back to where they were!!!
